What it's for

You want to start something, but you don't have an idea yet. Or you have a few and don't know which one you can really try. Use it before you pick anything.

What you'll need: About an hour, in two sittings if that's easier. Your job history helps (a resume or a quick list of past jobs and roles). A pen and a printer, or type straight into the document. Nothing to buy.

Pairs well with

What you'll leave with

  • A one-page "What I Bring" profile: your strengths, reach, resources and limits, in plain words.
  • A few strengths you probably take for granted, backed by things you've actually done.
  • A clear picture of who you could really reach for a conversation.
  • Safe boundaries for a first small step: how much money you'll risk, how many hours you'll give, and what's off limits.

How to use it

Work through the steps in order. Each one has a worked example and space to write your own answer.

  1. What People Already Trust You WithList what people come to you for, then turn labels like "organized" into real proof.
  2. The World You Know From the InsideWrite what you know about a field or community, and mark whether you saw it, were told it, or are guessing.
  3. Who You Can Actually ReachName the people who'd take your call, the ones an introduction away, and the places you could show up.
  4. Money, Hours and EnergyWrite the money you could lose without anything at home changing, the hours you can count on, and when you have real energy.
  5. Your Hard LimitsWrite down what your life won't bend around.
  6. Read What You WroteStep back, look for patterns, and check the signs to slow down.
  7. Tools That Help HereSee the free tools that help, if you want them.
  8. Do It With AICopy the ready-made prompts into a free AI tool to find skills you buried in old job descriptions.
  9. Your "What I Bring" ProfileFill in the one-page summary and your boundaries for a first small step.

Tips

  • Use the numbers from your worst normal week, not your best one. The workbook shows you why.
  • Ask two people who know you well what they come to you for. It's free, and usually more honest than a quiz.
  • Keep the profile. Update it when something real changes, like a new job or a new baby.

Three formats, one purchase

  • Google DocsMake a copy in your Google Drive and type straight into it.
