What it's for

You've just run a small real-world test and you need to work out what the result means. Use it so one good result doesn't make you overconfident, and one bad one doesn't make you quit.

What you'll need: Your test plan and notes, about an hour, and a free AI tool if you like. A pen and a printer, or type into the document. Nothing to buy.

Pairs well with

What you'll leave with

  • An honest record of what actually happened.
  • What you expected, side by side with what you saw.
  • At least one other reason the result could have happened.
  • What you believed before the test, and what you believe now.
  • A one-page Learning Decision Brief and the smallest next step that makes sense.

How to use it

Work through the steps in order. Each one has a worked example and space to write your own answer.

  1. Write Down What HappenedRecord the test as it really went, and what you expected, before you explain anything.
  2. Put What You Expected Next to What You SawLay them side by side so the gap is easy to see.
  3. Question Your First ExplanationFind at least one other reason for the result, with a worked example.
  4. Update What You BelieveChange your belief only as much as the result gives you reason to.
  5. Choose the Smallest Next MovePick the step that teaches you the most for the least.

Tips

  • Do it soon after the test ends, while the details are fresh.
  • Your first explanation is usually the one you want to be true. Write at least one other before you decide.
  • Keep the brief with your test plan so you can compare tests later.
