What it's for

You're running small tests and want honest answers. It makes you decide what counts as a yes before you start, then tells you plainly whether you hit the bar.

What you'll need: About 15 minutes per test to set up, and a few minutes when each one ends. Google Sheets (free) or Microsoft Excel, or a notebook. Nothing to buy.

Pairs well with

What you'll leave with

  • Every test in one place: your guess, what you'll do, and the YES bar you set in advance.
  • Start and end dates, money spent, and a countdown of days left.
  • A plain YES or NO for each finished test.
  • Your decision and the reason, written next to each result.

How to use it

Work through the steps in order. Each one has a worked example and space to write your own answer.

  1. Open the Start Here tabRead the steps, the color key and the free tools.
  2. Look at the Example tabSee Ken's window washing tests.
  3. Your Turn, the guess and the testWrite your guess in one plain sentence, then what you'll actually do.
  4. Your Turn, the YES barBefore you start, write a number and what it counts. Don't change it later.
  5. Your Turn, dates and moneyAdd start and end dates and any money spent.
  6. Your Turn, the resultWhen it ends, type the number that happened and a short note.
  7. Read the resultsThe Result column shows YES or NO. Pick your decision, write why, and plan the next test.

Tips

  • Never change the YES bar after the test starts. That's how people fool themselves.
  • Good tests cost little or nothing: a message, a flyer, a conversation.
  • Use the AI prompts on the Start Here tab to look for other explanations for your result.
