What it's for

You're talking to lots of people about a problem. It's getting hard to remember who you talked to and what they really said.

What you'll need: About 20 minutes to set up, then a few minutes after each talk. Google Sheets (free) or Microsoft Excel, or print it and use a pen. Nothing to buy.

Pairs well with

What you'll leave with

  • One row per person: how you know them, why you're talking to them, and when.
  • What you hoped to hear, right next to what they actually said.
  • A count of how often what you heard matched your hopes, partly matched, or didn't.
  • Follow-up steps with dates, and a flag on anything overdue.

How to use it

Work through the steps in order. Each one has a worked example and space to write your own answer.

  1. Open the Start Here tabRead the steps, the color key and the free tools.
  2. Look at the Example tabSee how Theo tracked his talks about mobile bike repair.
  3. Your Turn, list your peopleWrite 10 to 15 people who have the problem, how you know them and why you want to talk to them.
  4. Your Turn, before each talkWrite what you hope to hear. Do it before, not after.
  5. Your Turn, after each talkWrite what they actually said, in their words if you can, and mark if it matched: Yes, Partly or No.
  6. Your Turn, follow-upWrite one next step and a date. The Status column tells you what's due.
  7. Read the resultsOnce a week, look at the counts at the top.

Tips

  • Lots of "No" or "Partly" is useful news, not failure.
  • Take out names and private details before you paste notes into a free AI tool. The prompts are on the Start Here tab.
  • Count patterns yourself. A few talks can look like a pattern when they aren't.
